It became very popular amongst the Tor community, and was known for its community-maintained  directory of links to sites offering drugs, stolen credit cards, forged identity documents, child pornography, cyber-attacks for hire, contraband chemicals, and weapons. All the directory links were listed on the main page, and the Hidden Wiki has traditionally had few other pages.

Ion's Hidden Wiki had frequent down-times, and there were many other TOR hidden service mirrors of Ion's Hidden Wiki to serve as backup when the main site went down. It is likely that Ion stopped maintaining and administrating the wiki in late 2013 or early 2014.
